Business Intelligence Applications
In this era of transforming business models in law, firms need more than ever to understand
which are the most profitable clients, cases and practices and to identify and close efficiency
gaps. Business intelligence (BI) applications are game-changing in that they synthesize data
from disparate sources to answer these questions, helping law firms and their clients extract
greater value from resources and make beer decisions. BI extracts information from a sea of
data, presenting key information in dashboards, data visualizations and scorecards, reducing
time and manual spreadsheets.
For example, e-discovery case teams can use a BI portal application that integrates data
from financial and accounting systems with e-discovery project data. Real-time graphical
views of database usage, document review progress and legal spend help counsel and litigation
managers make decisions about review staffing, schedules and billing. Critical cost data also
helps counsel effectively assess proportionality — weighing costs versus benefits of pursuing
versus seling a case.
