5 WWW.ILTANET.ORG From ILTA's Leadership MESSAGES Yogi Berra famously quipped, "The future ain't what it used to be." Though some argue that the legal profession is precisely what it used to be, we continue our mission of providing future-focused content via this magazine and other educational offerings. "Design thinking," "cognitive technologies," "artificial intelligence." With only the slightest pun intended, I note our futuristic technologies are quite thoughtful. This summer edition of our magazine is provided for your reading pleasure, and it is filled with provocative ideas, scary thoughts, nostalgic reflections, interesting observations and more. We'll ground you with practical advice on Office 365 migrations and the imperative of continuous learning; we'll pique your interest with the notion of lawyers practicing from space; we'll sate your innovation cravings with talk of blockchain, virtual reality and robotic lawyering; we'll take you to the edge of your seats with cyber threats and shadow IT; and we'll keep you turning the pages for more of our contributors' views of our future. I tip my hat to the "Father of Law2020," John Alber. His ideas and influence provided the spark and the fuel for our future- focused programming, the crown jewel of which is this summer magazine. His views on design thinking are featured in this issue. Since the year 2020 has less of a future feel now than it did when Law2020 first launched, we're rebranding the concept to "Future- Focused," allowing us the luxury to look ahead infinitely. And we celebrate that new identity with this magazine. Get those binoculars or telescopes in focus, and tell a friend about ILTA, now and in the future! Messages From The Director MEREDITH L. WILLIAMS ILTA President mlwilliams@bakerdonelson.com From The President Summer is upon us, and that means the annual ILTACON event is right around the corner. I'm hopeful you'll join me and many of our colleagues at this premier educational and networking event in National Harbor, Maryland. The organization holds its Annual Meeting during lunch on Thursday of the conference, and I'm excited to provide a snapshot of our successes and challenges. At that meeting, I'll announce the finalization of our year-long review of our processes for the nomination and election of our Board of Directors. In previous issues of the magazine, I've touched on our work over the past year to investigate best practices within the association community at large and within our smaller universe of sister associations. Our peers were generous in sharing their own work to continuously examine and refine critical activities for bringing strong leadership forward in their organizations. We've benefited from that input as well as the observations and research of experts in the association governance arena. As we begin to communicate changes to our processes, we'll involve focus groups to help us cra and hone a message that is meaningful to our members. As we move into our fall meetings, the Board will begin critical dialogs to help shape the next strategic plan to guide the organization into 2020, a year that seemed distant not so long ago. It's fiing that I can tell you about our work to plan for a successful future in this annual edition of our Law2020- themed magazine, a commitment to keeping our eye on information to help you navigate rapid change in technology and in our business practices. As we work together, we'll create a bright future for the organization, for our employers and for the many professionals whose careers are ever-changing in our industry. Thank you for contributing to that future. Tell a colleague about ILTACON, and I'll see you there! Read this issue on the go!
