16 PEER TO PEER: THE QUARTERLY MAGAZINE OF ILTA | SUMMER 2016 BEST PRACTICES The Continuous Learning Imperative for Law Firms to understand what it takes for people to learn at work and deal with change. This is where learning and talent development will play a critical role in moving law firms forward. Learning is a physical process. We learn when our brains connect new information to existing knowledge. Elite workers must quickly learn new things, which requires them to be actively engaged in the learning, oen at their moment of need. Also set time aside for reflection and deliberate practice. Without practice, new skills are not embedded into long-term memory. Convergence of the Learning Silos Learning is more than building the skills of any individual. It is one of the strongest drivers of workplace culture. Advances in technology and the continuous need to upgrade workplace skills are disrupting corporate learning. There is a great need to reduce the time to competency, yet law firms lack a strategic plan for learning. Several departments play a role in employee development, but they don't work cohesively to share knowledge and resources. TAMI SCHILLER Tami Schiller is Head of Research & Insight for TutorPro.
