• Preparing your sales pitch; IT leaders are sales people, too! They sell projects, solutions, ideas and explanations every day. An IT leader must always be ready with an elevator speech whenever they get a chance to speak with a stakeholder • Staying current on industry knowledge; it is never a good thing to be caught off-guard when a partner asks what the IT department is doing about the issue covered in a technology article the partner just read in "The Wall Street Journal." Timeless Leadership These expectations, suggestions and obstacles are only the tip of the iceberg. Passion, integrity, resiliency, hard work and tenacity will also help each law firm IT leader discover and prepare for future challenges and ensure successful contributions to his/her respective law firm. And we can't forget that most leaders will stumble along the way; great leaders learn and overcome. Like the Apollo 13 team who overcame immeasurable obstacles to bring their astronauts home safely, IT leaders must continually adapt to new challenges to ensure the firm's future success. Skip Lohmeyer is the Chief Technology Officer at Hunter Maclean. He has been in director positions within the legal profession for over 15 years, including roles with Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak, and Stewart, P.C. and Haynsworth, Baldwin, Johnson, & Greaves, LLC. He can be reached at slohmeyer@huntermaclean.com. Incorporating the expectations of our past, present and future with the will to prepare for the roles we must fulfill, legal IT leaders will realize success no matter where the future takes us. I'd like to extend a special thanks to the many law firm IT leaders who contributed their thoughts via personal discussions and e-group posts. Your insight helped bring this article to fruition.
