A very early game-changer was imaging technology that allowed paper to be converted and used electronically, anytime and anywhere. Lawyers no longer needed to be located physically where the documents were. With optical character recognition (OCR) technology, for the first time lawyers could search across large volumes of documents. These technologies moved litigators from hard-copy data rooms to the online world. In what way is the role of a litigation support professional changing, and how do you deal with those changes? The commercial drivers in litigation have changed significantly with the explosion of big data coupled with client demand for improved efficiency. Technology will drive significant change in the legal profession, just as it is doing in most other industries. The changing commercial landscape means the litigation support professionals' role is evolving. There is much greater emphasis on risk, and commercial consequences rest on the advice of these professionals, so they must be commercially savvy and good negotiators. Litigation support professionals also must be experts at a much broader range of technologies. Fieen years ago, these professionals had to be experts at converting paper to an electronic form as sources for evidence. Now, potentially discoverable data come in a wide range of electronic forms — from email messages and electronic documents to text messages, voicemail and social media like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twier. The role of these professionals is growing to be much broader than just litigation.
