WWW.ILTANET.ORG 5 FROM THE DIRECTOR FROM THE PRESIDENT Have Questions? Want to Contribute? Contact kristy@iltanet.org As we close 2015, a year of great change for the organization, we look with excitement toward 2016, a year that will see even more change. It's the only constant in modern times, and the Board of Directors continually strategizes to maintain a nimble, responsive, relevant organization to serve your needs. The Board is currently undertaking an extensive review of its nomination and election processes. Guided by many years of consultancy from the association world and with input from our sister associations, we'll examine every aspect of how this organization selects its senior-most governing body. Transparency in the process is critical, and you'll hear from us as decisions are made. Our new volunteer structure officially launched in the fall, and we're already seeing the results of the new framework that is a holistic approach to all ILTA programming. We have many outstanding volunteers serving in the roles that best suit their talents and ability to commit their valuable time. Their energy and passion for their work will translate to excellent programming for you to consume. This issue of the magazine focuses on a top-of-mind topic for everyone: security. I look forward to diving into the varied and relevant articles and case studies that our contributors have provided; and I'm certain that security- related topics will be woven into much of the programming that we deliver in 2016 and beyond. I wish you all a healthy, prosperous year ahead. Meredith L. Williams ILTA President mlwilliams@bakerdonelson.com As we ring in a new year, there is no more pervasive, relevant or ubiquitous concern facing our profession than "security." Its many facets and rapidly changing complexities have us locking our doors, our networks and our processes for information exchange like never before. The legal sector is on the front line in safeguarding client and firm data, and one of our authors opines, "The world is far more connected now than at any time in history. The need to protect personal information and data from criminal, deliberate or accidental access or loss has never been greater." Did you see the scary looking guy on the cover? He's a threat to your data in the cloud, in the electronic file room, on your laptop/tablet and at all points along those paths. It's comforting to know that ILTA's security-focused resources are bountiful and close at hand. Our contributors provide their insights and experiences to assist you in shoring up your defenses. There are many articles focused on low-cost (or no-cost!) ideas for securing your data. Our "Ask the Expert" column is a particular gem, with input from several of our LegalSEC Council members telling us what keeps them awake at night and what they're doing about their concerns. We have you looking in the cloud and on the premises for security threats and defenses, and there are several references to ISO certification updates and guidelines. The critical need for ongoing security awareness training is referenced throughout. All that and much more. This issue of the magazine is a belated holiday present to the legal sector, and it's the type of gift that keeps on giving. Read, learn, share (following your own excellent policies for information sharing, of course). Here's to a healthy, prosperous, secure 2016; please tell a friend about ILTA!
