PEER TO PEER: THE QUARTERLY MAGA ZINE OF ILTA 66 ASK THE EXPERT LISTEN TO THE RECORDED INTERVIEWS ONLINE: www.iltanet.org/podcasts Andy: When you're in the office, you have moments of interaction that interrupt your day. There are many studies about interruptions, how much time it takes to get back on task and productivity levels associated with that. Although, it is important to have interaction, so when we have people telecommuting, we bring them into the office for occasional facetime. It's cultural; it's having pizza in the conference room while generating ideas — it's not necessarily a productivity-focused day. When I'm telecommuting, I get up in the morning and start working a lot earlier. I don't have to get dressed up, commute to and from the office, leave my work area for lunch, etc. I usually stay on longer, too. We find that people have no problem putting in extra time because they'd normally be commuting or what have you. This helps morale and with situations at home. It helps with hiring a diverse workforce. These factors positively affect productivity and collaboration. Paul: Reliable and fairly high-quality videoconferencing technology is essential for successfully maintaining productivity and collaboration levels when you have a remote workforce. We have several attorneys who primarily work remotely, and we have them schedule periodic visits to the office. It sounds simple, but it sets a schedule, an expectation. It also provides an opportunity for remote workers to meet those who support them in IT and discuss questions or issues they have experienced. If you're transitioning employees to a remote setup, employees who are used to an in- office work environment, you need to focus on due diligence after they move from their normal physical space. Check in with them periodically, be aggressive and ask what additional tools might be needed. Make sure you keep people engaged. Your documents.
