article title what was seemingly becoming a daily exercise, I decided I had had enough of hosted Lync — at least until Microsoft and "optimized for Microsoft Lync" manufacturers figure out all of the issues. But is Lync ready for legal? Ask Preliminary Questions Regardless of how I feel or what my concerns are, there are cases in favor of and against Lync as a prime-time platform for enterprise. The most relevant questions to address for anyone in the legal profession considering Lync are simple: Why do you want to adopt Lync and how do you plan to assure its high availability? If you can't dive into, understand and answer these key questions first, Lync as a premise-based solution isn't for you. Size matters because it justifies using economies of scale, and resources matter. Since the Lync solution requires internal resources committed to high availability and survivability to support always-on real-time communications, understanding your position and Lync will either lead you toward Lync or away from it. Make Your Business Case A major concern with using Lync in the legal world relates to process improvement. What exactly is Lync going to do to improve business communications processes within the profession? How will Lync integrate into other applications, such as tracking billable time for attorneys? When Lync is deployed for back-office operations, what specifically will it do to streamline inter/intraoffice communications? Will Lync slow down a practice or speed up the workflow, and how? Identifying these answers will start you on the right track to building your business case. ILTA White Paper 41
