WWW.ILTANET.ORG 77 Whatcha Readin'? The ILTA community is filled with avid readers. Here are some recent recommendations. The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand: The History and Legacy of the Event That Triggered World War I by Charles River Editors The final straw came June 28, 1914 when a Serbian assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Austria- Hungary immediately issued ultimatums to Serbia, but when they declared war on Serbia July 28, 1914, Russia mobilized for war as well. The Germans mobilized in response to Russia on July 30, and the French, still smarting from the Franco- Prussian War, mobilized for war against Germany. The British also declared war on Germany on August 4. Thus, in the span of one week, six nations had declared war, half of which had no interest in the Balkans. The story is fascinating, and this book captures it well for anyone interested in history. Brice Duffy DeWitt Mackall Crounse & Moore S.C. Give and Take: Why Helping Others Drives Our Success by Adam Grant I particularly enjoyed "Give and Take." It has some very interesting insight into the nature of people and the drivers of success. The author discusses how we humans interact with one another in areas such as networking, collaboration, influence, negotiation and leadership. It reminded me of the spirit of ILTA, now that I think about it. Mike Russell Ingersoll Rand Cognitive Cooking with Chef Watson: Recipes for Innovation from IBM & the Institute of Culinary Education by IBM and the Institute of Culinary Education This book was a gift for my husband — the only cook in our house — but it is also great for geeks who love anything to do with technology. I have a huge interest in artificial intelligence. The book is fun to read, and the best part is you get access to Chef Watson to collaborate on recipes. I might even take up cooking now (okay...maybe not, but the book is that good!). Ginevra Saylor Dentons Work Rules!: Insights from Inside Google That Will Transform How You Live and Lead by Laszlo Bock I really enjoyed "Work Rules," as Bock includes valuable knowledge on hiring (and firing), training, assessing and compensating people well. Throughout the book, the author reiterates that you should not trust your gut but rather trust data to drive decisions that can help transform your organizational culture. This book does a brilliant job of outlining the importance of building an employee-happiness-driven and data-informed operations team. "Work Rules" will resonate with anyone at any stage in their career, especially human resources professionals. Luke Schnoebelen Shook, Hardy & Bacon L.L.P.
