PEER TO PEER: THE QUARTERLY MAGA ZINE OF ILTA 72
Clients and attorneys want to be involved with a law firm that uses
technology to improve efficiency and quality. Yet 80 percent of law firms say they
rely on paper records to maintain an official client matter file. Here are statistics from
DocSolid's ILTA roadshow poll of 106 attending firms. The participant count will increase
as the roadshow continues, but the numbers are settling in. And they are unsettling.
Firms that answered B, C or D are operating with an acknowledged
dependency on a paper files — which is troubling in terms of cost, risk and
inefficiency.
Even firms that answered A — that the document management system
(DMS) is their official matter file — admit that a corresponding paper file often
houses documents that aren't in the DMS.
A fully digital matter file improves productivity, quality and security.
Advanced firms are striving to achieve a fully digital matter file, while allowing
attorneys who prefer to work with paper to do so, except that the paper file
becomes a working copy.
