PEER TO PEER: THE QUARTERLY MAGA ZINE OF ILTA 52 PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS As pricing within law firms is still in its infancy, formal qualifications are still few and far between. Many of those who succeed in the role have come from accountancy, business or MBA-driven backgrounds, and this provides an excellent framework. There are also several good pricing-specific training courses available with a quick search of the Internet. For those looking to take the next step professionally, however, there are limited options. One option worth considering is the Professional Pricing Society's Certificate of Professional Pricing (CPP) . The qualification is structured around completing six credit courses, followed by the CPP accreditation exam. Although more focused around pricing concepts applicable across all industries (rather than being specific to law), the themes addressed provide an excellent foundation for those working in the field. Topics covered range from the role of costs in pricing and pricing segmentation to skills required to manage a pricing function, such as developing a pricing strategy, communicating prices effectively and negotiation. There has also been a rise in the number of broader courses covering law firm management, which are incorporating modules on pricing, negotiation and legal project management (for example, review George Washington University's Certificate in Law Firm Management). HERE TO STAY The pricing role within law firms and law departments is a profession on the move, and opportunities will continue to expand. If this is an area of interest for you, take time to develop the skills and qualifications needed to become one of legal pricing's most wanted.
