it's all about vdi
includes a Terminal Services CAL and App-V to
standard PCs. This will cost you about US$80 per year
in addition to VECD.
LOOKING AHEAD
VMware has been the dominant player in the server
virtualization market, but that doesn't necessarily
mean they will have the best VDI solution going
forward. Citrix seems to have bet the farm on
XenDesktop, so you can count on that product getting
some considerable resources behind it. The fact
that XenDesktop can run on several different back
end platforms also makes it an attractive offering to
those who don't want to be tied into a single vendor.
Microsoft, however, seems to be going forward
with VDI more to try and "keep up with the
Joneses" than because they feel it's the best
strategy. A little research will bring up several
prominent MS employees stating that they
feel a full desktop and application streaming
is the best way to go forward. That being said,
Microsoft is never going to voluntarily give up
market share, so you can also count on several
enhancements and new products from Microsoft
coming out in the future. Depending upon your
license agreement with Microsoft, this could
make it your least expensive option for VDI. ILTA
