"The document viewer and editor on your smartphone is basic and does not show track changes." Using a tablet makes it easy to make minor changes to a document when out of the office; some attorneys will now write paragraphs, if not whole documents, using their iPads. Tablets increase what you can do while away from the office, but with no metadata cleansing tool installed, all information contained in the metadata is retained and viewable by the recipient. It is worth noting that there is now at least one document viewer and editor for the iPad and iPhone that has the ability to view track changes and comments. However, it does not currently support the "accepting" or "rejecting" of track changes. Utilizing such an application at least gives a visual warning that what you are sending is not "clean." 66 Risky Business ILTA White Paper Mobile Access to Document Management Systems: The mobile lawyer also now has access to the firm's document management system via interfaces written specifically for smartphones and other mobile devices. A press release some months ago for a new smartphone app that provides an interface to a well- known document management system caught my eye. In the press release, a lawyer who used the app commented on the amount of time saved and the associated fees saved from the client perspective, due to the ability of the lawyer to access documents on the firm's document management system and email them to the client via his smartphone. This is all well and good, but what about the lack of metadata cleaning?
