Becoming an Effective Values-Based Leader Leading with values requires us to operate with the confidence to disagree when necessary, compromise when it makes sense and lead the charge when no one else steps up. In my mind, that is not only what I am paid to do, it is being true to my own values and those of the firm, and it is what is most rewarding in the face of constant challenges. ILTA Steven D. Traits Associated with a Values-Based Approach One can tie many management and leadership traits back to those who take a values-based approach. The key is to understand the connection. Some of these traits include: • Ability to communicate • Being principled • Confidence • Courage to challenge • Fairness • Honesty • Initiative • Persuasiveness While some traits may be harder to tie to firm or organizational values, there may be a time and place to bring these traits to bear to create balance in approach and dialogue, including: • Aggressiveness • Ambition • Assertiveness • Competitiveness • Forcefulness • Quickness to act • Skepticism Know your strengths and how you can apply these to your work.
