Proper Exchange design, regular monitoring of Exchange health and staff education are all important components to meeting defined recovery objectives, and every minute counts when considering the amount of data that might be lost, and the time required to recover it. The Cloud Conversation It’s hard to have a technology conversation today without someone mentioning how the Cloud will empower organizations to achieve IT nirvana. For a small firm, or those with very minimal integration requirements, the concept of moving to a hosted solution is very compelling. Aside from privacy and confidentiality concerns with a multi-tenant infrastructure, some law firms are concerned that Clearly there are a number of beneficial new features in Exchange 2010 for law firms of all sizes. Previously these features were either expensive, not available or required an investment in third-party solutions. With Exchange 2010, this functionality can be managed natively within the messaging platform, potentially saving costs and maximizing efficiency. “Every minute counts when considering the amount of data that might be lost.” they will not be able to integrate necessary back-end systems, manage service level agreements or provide the level of troubleshooting that they currently “enjoy” by hosting systems on-premises. There is currently an interesting discussion centered on providing rich co-existence between an on-premises and Cloud-based Exchange 2010 solution. This would allow organizations to begin the transition to the Cloud, and offset costs by moving administrative and staff mailboxes to a more tightly- managed hosted solution. As more integrated applications provide the ability to integrate with hosted Exchange solutions, these solutions will become even more compelling. BEST PRACTICES AND INDUSTRY TRENDS Implementing Exchange 2010 requires attention to specific details, and the use of best practices — many of which have been adapted for law firms, but cannot be easily summarized in the context of this article. However, the following are a few common trends worth noting: Role Deployment Exchange 2010 is offered in Standard and Enterprise versions, and both include five distinct functions called “roles:” Client Access, Hub Transport, Mailbox, Unified Messaging or Edge Transport. • Client Access, Hub Transport and Mailbox roles are required for every deployment • Client Access and Hub Transport roles are almost always collocated on the same server; mailbox roles are typically deployed separately www.iltanet.org Exchange 2010 13
