The Downside of Mobile Devices in the Workplace N ot long ago, smartphones, tablets and other mobile computing devices were limited to the C-level of an organization. Today, virtually all employees, including those subject to the overtime regulations imposed by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), are bringing personal mobile devices to work and connecting to corporate resources such as e-mail and calendars. Each time a new mobile device makes its way to the market, the likelihood that it will be connected to a business network (through the proper channels or not) is extremely high. No other technology has impacted the workplace and muddied the waters of what constitutes “working hours” as much as mobility. Despite consumer enthusiasm for mobile devices, organizations are struggling to get a handle on the HR and legal implications of employee-liable devices in the workplace. While organizations are beginning to take the necessary steps to effectively manage and secure the devices themselves, far fewer are taking precautions to manage the people actually using them. by Ahmed Datoo 74 www.iltanet.org Peer to Peer
