BIOBEATS FITBIT FLEX NIKE+ IPOD SENSOR In 2001, Apple rolled out the first iPod just in time for the holiday season. Within two to three years, iPods earned a spot on the tween wish list, right after cellphones, which tweens already had. It was the marketing — the style rather than the substance — that put the iPod over the top. Who can forget the imagery of the iPod — the commercials wherein a silhouetted figure, earbuds dangling, gyrates to the Gorillaz? The Gorillaz are cool. I want to be cool. I would have dangled my earbuds, but I was already too old to be mistaken for a hipster. The iPod was a pretty good PMP, but in many ways the competition was just as good. The iPod supported the MP3 format, but it was expensive, relied on a mechanical hard drive and only worked with Macs at the outset. Sony devices incorporated flash memory. Almost all competitors were significantly less expensive than the iPod, some even a fraction of the cost. Who cares? We bought iPods anyway. Peer to Peer 77
