MEMBER RESOURCES great shape with limited staff is always challenging for a firm our size, and I don’t see that changing much. But in the future, it will be critical to have a much broader view of what makes a law firm profitable — to know what the business problems are first and then look at how technology is there to address them. What is the best advice you can give someone considering service to ILTA or to any volunteer-led association? Jim? Jim: I’d say, Get involved in some form — any form. Volunteer to host a local meeting — it’s a great way to network within your city, and it gets you wired into the regional side of volunteering. Become a city rep. This involves planning the topics you might want to learn about in your city and is the next step to becoming an RVP. Assess your personal strengths and knowledge in legal IT, and then look for volunteer speaking opportunities to share your experiences at a local meeting, on a webinar or at conference. Your advice, Scott? Scott: Like the TV commercial says, “Just Do It!” We have countless volunteer opportunities. You can post on one of our many e-groups. You can write an article for Peer to Peer magazine or contribute to a white paper on a topic of interest, participate on a committee or task force, become a city representative and assist in program delivery in our local city markets. You can join one of our peer group steering committees that assist in the delivery of webinars and roadshows for our members, and you have numerous speaking opportunities at local meetings and conference. I can assure prospective volunteers that getting involved in ILTA in any capacity will be the most rewarding experience you’ll ever have personally and professionally. Just ask anyone who’s done it. Jim, Scott, thank you for sharing your obviously deep experience with the association. I think you’ve provided a lot of good information that might ignite that volunteer spark in our readership.
