LESSONSLEARNED • Let Others Lead Online and On Target agree to meet or exceed your expectations. If they don’t, you have to deal with it directly. In my view, that’s the only way this works. Set clear goals, leave them alone, and hold them accountable. I saved the best (or worst, depending on where you’re sitting) for last. When you’re used to being in charge, it’s hard to sit in a room full of people and let someone else take the lead; however, this is exactly what you should do to empower your team and keep them motivated. I wish I could tell you I’ve mastered this one, but it’s just too hard for me to keep from interjecting my opinion when I should be silent. Therefore, I try and only attend meetings where I’m truly adding value. It’s better to not attend and let someone lead than to attend and take away their sense of project ownership. The downside to this approach is that it sometimes gives the impression that the project is not important enough to require my participation. Obviously, I need to keep working on this one. One of ILTA’s most valued resources is our volunteer authors — knowledgeable and experienced legal professionals who come from the ranks of our member and vendor communities. It’s the wealth of educational content that comes from folks out in the trenches that is so valuable to our readers; and we are grateful to our authors for taking the extra time and effort to share the information and experience they’ve acquired. Our editorial lineup each year is based on topics and areas of interest suggested by our membership. The content is relevant and provides insight from those whose knowledge and experience can be most helpful to you. Our digital publications, in addition to fostering our desire to “go green,” allow us to link to additional multi- media content and resources that provide even more value. I’d love to stand before you today and declare, “My name is Craig Bingham, and I’ve been clean from micromanagement for 10 years,” but that wouldn’t be the truth. I will be the first to admit that I fail as much as I succeed in achieving these goals. However, I keep trying, and I continue to improve. There are no perfect leaders. All we can do is work hard to achieve the goals of those who provide our employment, while at the same time supporting, empowering and developing others. This is the balancing act, and while it’s not easy, as leaders we have a responsibility to serve both constituencies. ILTA Craig Bingham is the Director of Technology for Bass, Berry & Sims PLC, where he is responsible for IT, Research Services and Records Management. He has spent 20 years in the technology industry, the last nine of which have been in legal. In his role as Director of Technology, Craig focuses on building teams that utilize technology to help the firm’s attorneys and staff exceed client expectations. He can be reached at cbingham@bassberry.com.
