herry Kappel's four-decade career in legal technology reflects a rare combination of innovation, trusted leadership, and unwavering dedication to the legal community. Beginning her journey on February 13, 1984, at Microsystems Engineering Corporation (MEC), Sherry entered the profession during the earliest era of legal document automation. MEC's MASS-11 platform, originally designed for law firms running on DEC VAX/ VMS systems, became foundational technology for document-intensive industries worldwide. From the beginning, Sherry recognized that law firms set the standard for sophisticated document processing, and L I F E T I M E A C H I E V E M E N T A W A R D / 2026 helped firms confidently manage complex transitions while preserving document and content integrity, usability, and trust. Sherry's leadership has consistently centered on understanding context before introducing technology. Rather than forcing firms into rigid solutions, she listened carefully to how legal professionals worked and built strategies around those uniquenesses and realities. This philosophy shaped products and initiatives tied to Microsystems' and Litera's products, as well as broader industry efforts designed to improve 2014 Innovative Consultant of the Year Innovative Vendor, Thought Leader of the Year PRIOR DISTINGUISHED PEER WINS 2017 Best Blog of the Year 2022 she dedicated her career to helping legal professionals navigate every major technological transformation that followed. T h ro u g h o u t h e r c a re e r, S h e r r y b e c a m e a t r u s t e d a d v i s o r t o firms across the globe, guiding them through evolving document t e c h n o l o g i e s w i t h e m p a t h y , expertise, and a deep understanding o f o p e r a t i o n a l r e a l i t i e s . H e r c o n t r i b u t i o n s e x t e n d e d f a r beyond software implementation. S h e d e v e l o p e d i n f l u e n t i a l m e t h o d o l o g i e s a n d c o n c e p t s , including "Am I a Bad Document?," p e r f e c t e d d o c u m e n t r e b u i l d s t r a t e g i e s , s t y l e m a n a g e m e n t , document conversion frameworks, and her widely cited philosophy that "metadata is like cholesterol: there is good metadata, and there is bad metadata" and it is our responsibility to manage both.
