P E E R T O P E E R M A G A Z I N E ยท S P R I N G 2 0 2 6 91 THE FUTURE OF AUTHENTICITY In the next few years, enterprise video volume will grow at a pace most organizations are not ready for. As reported by NPR in "People Are Trying to Claim Real Videos Are Deepfakes. The Courts Are Not Amused," judges and regulators are already confronting defendants who casually invoke "deepfake" without evidence, and they are not impressed. Courts will increasingly expect systems that can prove authenticity as confidently as they capture footage. For legal technologists, investigators, litigators, paralegals, and anyone who works with digital evidence, this is a chance to lead responsibly. According to the provenance and standards work coming out of groups like C2PA and the evidence-rules committees, if we design for provenance and timelines now, we can shape how truth is established. And when someone tries to wave away an inconvenient truth as a "deepfake," the record will speak for itself, and the jury will have no trouble seeing through the claim. DONNA M. MEDREK Donna M.
