T he corner office no longer holds the same appeal it once did. For many professionals, the long hours of managing people and tasks no longer outweigh the modest perks of a higher salary or extra vacation days. So, where does that leave individual contributors who want to influence and control their work environment but lack the title or formal authority to do so? And what about their managers? How can they support high- performing contributors who are not interested in following the traditional path of promotion? Legal professionals will need to find answers to these questions quickly. A 2020 poll by the Boston Consulting Group found that only 9% of global workers aspire to a management role. A 2022 Visier survey reported that just 38% of workers want a promotion to manager, regardless of industry or location. The generational shift is even more striking. By 2030, Gen Z will comprise 30% of the global workforce, and 42% of them explicitly state that they do not want to go into management.
