It is the only way they will reach the AI nirvana they
seek with the levels of accuracy they require.
STEP 1: DO NO HARM
So, how can legal organizations best get started on this
road to AI-powered, self-service glory?
Eager as they may be to get started, their first order of
business is to do no harm. This means not pointing
their AI towards an unstructured "blob" of data and
hoping that the AI can discern what is useful or
relevant information and what is not. For example,
AI today struggles with determining the order of
precedence and recognizing when an addendum has
superseded an original agreement.
Instead, organizations need to pause and ensure they
have a steady foundation that AI can build upon.
STEP 2: FOCUS ON INFORMATION
ARCHITECTURE
High-quality self-service will not work without high-
quality data. As a result, legal organizations must refine
their information architecture (IA) before deploying
AI-powered solutions.
This IA is of foundational importance: AI must be
directed at final, validated content, not an unstructured
pool of drafts, third-party content, and outdated
documents. Without guidance, AI might analyze all
document versions, failing to differentiate between an
