Doug has uniformly and consistently ideated, designed and executed on his joint team and firm-wide objectives, always, while balancing outcomes, services and ROI, in a manner that I have observed few other CIOs. Finalist / L I F E T I M E A C H I E V E M E N T A W A R D Doug's innovative legal tech contributions are extensive, i n c l u d i n g i n i t i a t i n g m o b i l e te c h n o l o g y a s a ve r y e a r l y Blackberry user, developing deep integration between Foley legal systems and client Johnson Controls, and helping to co-invent the Relativity ediscovery software program. He created FoleyClient Suite, five years ahead of HighQ, and led Foley to become BigHand's largest North American client. Doug developed cutting-edge training programs, such as the Technology Orientation Program (TOP), which CIO Magazine nationally recognized. At Foley, Doug established the Practice & Client Solutions ( P C S ) a s a n e a r l y i n n ov a t i o n t e a m , w i n n i n g 1 4 m a j o r i n te r n a t i o n a l a w a rd s fo r i n n ov a t i o n . H e re p l i c a te d t h i s at Mayer Brown, forming that firm's PCS innovation team. His achievements include leading Foley's early adoption of NetDocuments' cloud-based DMS, fostering collaboration with the marketing department, implementing a technology allowance for attorneys, and facilitating large-scale desktop virtualization adoption. In 2023, Doug created the Modern Workplace team at Mayer Brown, focusing on the Microsoft Modern Workplace ecosystem. Doug has authored numerous articles and co-authored the book, Achieving Excellence in Legal Technology Management, contributing chapters on strategic thinking, and the internal and external marketing of IT. His volunteer leadership roles span many professional organizations and educational forums, including chairing the European legal tech conference at Gleneagles, Scotland, and founding ILTA's European branch. Doug has participated in over 30 ILTACONs. ILTA has provided him with international colleagues, fostering friendships and contributing to his professional growth. Doug's accolades include the CIO 100 award, InformationWeek 500 award, and Chicago CIO of the Year nominee, and both U.S. and International Legal CIO of the Year. His contributions to legal technology and innovation have been widely recognized, including features on the Blackberry corporate website and the Top Tech Savvy law firm recognition by BTI Consulting. His mantra, "Challenge the Status Quo," epitomizes his commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.
