48 G enerative AI (GenAI) and large language models (LLMs) are no longer experimental tools; they are becoming everyday assistants in contract drafting, due diligence, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) transactions, and compliance checks. This shift is streamlining traditionally tedious tasks—what used to take hours of manual review can often be accomplished in minutes with GenAI- enhanced technology. GenAI tools enhance accuracy by flagging risks or missing clauses, provide data-driven insights, and, hopefully, increase access to justice and the quality of work. In-house counsel, solo practitioners, and small firms are adopting GenAI- enhanced tech solutions at nearly the same rate as large firms, helping to level the playing field in terms of resources and efficiency. But with this promise comes new challenges—ethical use, client confidentiality, and regulatory compliance all come to mind. As AI becomes increasingly embedded in legal workflows, lawyers must strike a balance between the efficiency gains and their professional duties to ensure the security of information and the credibility of their work products. BALANCING EFFICIENCY AND CONFIDENTIALITY Integrating GenAI into legal practice presents a dual challenge: maximizing value and efficiency without compromising confidentiality. On the one hand, the benefits are clear—faster contract turnarounds, automated compliance monitoring, and cost savings on routine work.
