P E E R T O P E E R M A G A Z I N E ยท S P R I N G 2 0 2 5 25 Kenzie was reading far ahead of her grade level from an early age. We began actively attending library sessions to satisfy her voracious love for reading. We are now exploring academic and extracurricular options to prepare for her start in high school next year. Kenzie decided to participate in the scholars' program, where she can complete her associate's degree concurrently while earning her high school diploma. She wants to be a lawyer, so I am working with her to create a successful roadmap. Braydon, a mathematical prodigy, is eight and a committed diver on the junior Olympic circuit. Tamia, a curious storyteller with many talents, is four years old. She is also an avid reader, plays soccer, and studies martial arts and dance. We share lessons we have learned and stories from our family's history. We create space for them to explore and discover who they are and who they are becoming as their authentic selves. From the beginning, we establish narratives that teach them they can do anything and that learning is infinite. Professionally, I am consistently committed to fostering an environment of trust, respect, and belonging for my team. Everyone has a role, and every role is necessary for a team to be successful. I help others navigate a similar path and serve as an example of what is possible. I invest time and energy in working with young women and girls to create roadmaps that help them achieve much loftier goals than I have achieved. WHAT ARE A FEW PIECES OF GENERAL AND GENAI- SPECIFIC ADVICE THAT YOU SHARE WITH THOSE YOU MENTOR? It is essential to foster empathy, authenticity, curiosity, kindness, and radical hospitality in their lives and careers. We must remain steadfast in our commitment to challenging social norms and advancing humanitarian causes, particularly in this unprecedented era of digital progress. Finally, perhaps most importantly, you must be willing to do the work that increases your self-awareness. At some point, you will face adversity. Increasing your self-awareness by developing a grounded sense of who you are prepares you to face adversity with less harm to your mental health and more remarkable ability to cope and thrive. Regarding GenAI-specific advice, I emphasize the importance of ethical considerations and fairness within AI systems. I encourage individuals to study GenAI, focus on addressing implicit bias, and highlight the significance of diversity and inclusion in technology development to create more equitable AI systems. I also share experiences of overcoming challenges and biases in my career as practical examples of ways to tackle similar issues they may face in AI development. Providing resources and opportunities to learn about AI through educational programs and hands-on projects is also critical for professional development. Lastly, I encourage all mentees to adopt and foster a mindset of continuous learning and curiosity, encouraging them to ask questions and improve existing technologies.
