33 I L T A N E T . O R G V anderbilt Law School's reputation for legal innovation and its VAILL (Vanderbilt AI Law Lab) initiative are inspirational. Law students are the lawyers of tomorrow who play a crucial role in assimilating and adopting modern approaches to legal practice. In early April 2024, I presented information about Aderant's AI solutions for legal professionals to a group of Vanderbilt Law School students and community members. This online session produced illuminating discussions and bolstered the momentum for a groundbreaking collaboration between Vanderbilt Law School and Aderant. Vanderbilt Law School and Aderant have been proactive in launching initiatives to accelerate ways that AI can be applied to legal and increase access to justice. In 2023, Aderant launched MADDI, a pre-trained AI- powered virtual associate that the company is weaving into its comprehensive product suite, including Expert. Vanderbilt Law School recently launched VAILL [Vanderbilt AI Law Lab - Vanderbilt Law School | Vanderbilt University] to harness AI to expand access to legal services and knowledge and improve the delivery of legal services. This year, Aderant featured VAILL co-director Mark Williams (who co-founded VAILL with co-director Caitlin "Cat" Moon) during our 2024 Global Momentum conference in Nashville earlier this month. Mark joined a panel discussion exploring topics that included the role of AI in legal education, its challenges, opportunities with integrating AI into legal practice, and how Vanderbilt Law is equipping its students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in an increasingly technology-driven legal landscape. When addressing this innovative collaboration, Mark explained, "Vanderbilt Law School and VAILL are deeply committed to our students gaining a better understanding of AI's potential for legal service delivery and access to justice. We are excited to collaborate with a company like Aderant, which shares our passion for innovation in AI and legal technology. For many years, we have been committed to breaking down the silos between law schools, law firms, and legal technology providers for a greater cross-pollination of ideas. In service of this, we look forward to finding new ways to grow this collaboration with Aderant to benefit our students." This spring and summer, Aderant and Vanderbilt Law will discuss how our collaboration will manifest in the 2024/2025 academic year. VAILL will embark on strategic projects that enlist faculty, staff, and students in the research process, with an eye on implementing solutions that benefit students and the community. Aderant and Vanderbilt Law both plan on taking part in ILTACON 2024 as well. We look forward to seeing you in August and are delighted to share ongoing developments and learnings about ways that AI is transforming the business of law with the ILTA community! ILTA Andy Hoyt is chief technology officer (CTO) of Aderant, the leading global provider of business management solutions for law firms.
