49 I L T A N E T . O R G reporting, is imperative to navigate the evolving legal landscape effectively. Compromises with Past Digital Reporting Before, practical limitations, such as providing rough real- time transcripts, hindered digital court reporting from meeting legal professionals' high standards. Real-time rough transcripts are valuable because they allow attorneys and other participants in legal proceedings to review a preliminary written record of the testimony as it unfolds. These transcripts help lawyers clarify points and objections and proceed with trust in real-time. The absence of this feature in early digital reporting systems presented a significant drawback. Additionally, legal professionals expect quick turnaround times for transcripts, especially in expedited cases. Traditional stenographers can often deliver final transcripts within a day or two, depending on the case's complexity. In contrast, early digital reporting solutions had greater difficulty providing next-day transcripts consistently. Real-time streaming is crucial for remote or distributed legal proceedings. It enables participants in different locations to access the live transcription in real- time. Early digital reporting systems faced challenges in providing reliable real-time streaming capabilities, further diminishing the adoption of digital reporting for remote depositions and hearings. Immediate readbacks are essential for both remote and in-room legal proceedings. While stenographers can provide readbacks that allow for a rapid review of the transcript, this proved to be more difficult in early digital reporting solutions. Ultimately, this reduced the adoption of digital reporting. Those historical limitations understandably generated skepticism among legal practitioners regarding the reliability and effectiveness of digital court reporting. Legal professionals rely on accurate, real-time, and efficient reporting to ensure the integrity of legal proceedings. When digital reporting systems fell short in these critical areas, it created reservations about their suitability as alternatives to traditional stenographers. However, it is essential to note that digital court reporting technology has evolved significantly over the years. Modern digital reporting solutions have addressed many of these historical difficulties, allowing a greater number of practitioners to provide: • Real-time rough transcripts • Next-day transcripts • Reliable real-time streaming • Immediate readback capabilities "Real-time streaming is crucial for remote or distributed legal proceedings."
