45 I L T A N E T . O R G and improved features that accommodate the nuances of CJK languages, so it is always a good idea to inquire accordingly. For reference purposes, FRONTEO has released multiple AI-based algorithms since KIBIT Automator's debut in 2012, each designed to process different data types, and all optimized to support CJK and Latin languages upon version releases. In line with FRONTEO's commitment to improving cutting-edge technology and developing innovative solutions, FRONTEO recently released a new algorithm for use in KIBIT Automator that contains newly developed methods for handling morphemes (meaningful small linguistic units of language), improved classification algorithms to suppress overlearning, and a fine-tuning of existing features for cohesive operation. Edward Rippey, a partner with Covington & Burling LLP, and chair of the firm's E-Discovery, AI, and Information Governance Practice, also added the following comments on this topic. "We routinely handle cross-border litigations and investigations of all sizes -- small, medium, and large -- that are complex and involve tricky eDiscovery and CJK issues. The four considerations in this article capture the issues to which we pay close attention. The technical analytics, the privacy laws, the language complexities, and the local considerations are tightly intertwined in most cross-border matters. We therefore prefer providers who deliver well on all these considerations because they then can promote an efficient partnership between and among the corporate end client, the law firm, and the provider." In closing, your role may not require a deep level of expertise in the above areas, but your project almost certainly will. So, if you have cross-border cases likely to involve CJK languages, we strongly suggest working with a team that has native language speakers, a local presence, and/or ESI experts in-country. In addition, we also recommend asking service providers that support cross- border matters to share a clear explanation of workflows, processes, and approaches, as well as relevant experiences in handling data in compliance with local data privacy laws.
