17 I L T A N E T . O R G Creativity builds on curiosity and empathy when we take those different perspectives into account when designing solutions, and it also means resisting the urge to get attached to the first or most obvious approach we identify. Flexibility is important because if we aren't learning and adapting as we go, we're probably missing something. Do you have a life philosophy? Where does it originate and how does it shape who you are? NICKI: I can answer each of these two below with a similar answer: my actions, aspirations, and interaction with others is firmly rooted in ethics philosophy as well as being able to understand the experience of others. I enjoy reading, listening to podcasts, and moreover, writing. I am currently working on a manuscript on digital ethics for more meaningful online engagement. I also enjoy talking to others about these things including family like my mom and husband, friends and colleagues, as well other professionals. I am deeply inspired by musicians and their poetry, specifically classic rock artists like the Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd as well as classical (for structure and focus) and jazz (inspires improvisation, openness, and agility). I still play piano from time to time, and I just have such an appreciation for the expression of art and beauty. Words are another such example. Yes, even corporate communications, when done right, can inspire – shaping people and driving change. MARION: I grew up hearing my grandfather and my mother say to always leave things better than you found them. It works for mundane things like replacing food in the kitchen, but it's also a reminder to look for ways to have a positive impact on the people and places in our lives. In my current role, I lead a team of former practicing attorneys and paralegals, and one of my favorite things about my job is that there are several layers of helping people: Our team's focus is on delivering knowledge and innovation solutions to attorneys and staff, my focus is is on helping my team do that while also pursuing their own professional interests and goals, and all of that work helps clients, who benefit directly and indirectly from knowledge and innovation solutions. What advice would you give to your younger self? NICKI: I know you're a perfectionist and it's important to have aspirations and the dedication to achieve them. Just don't prioritize perfection over progress, because you will be hindered. You will achieve, you will succeed, you will attain your highest goals. Maybe not all at once and maybe in imperfect incremental phases that don't necessarily go as planned, but it will work out just as it should. You will still find fulfillment and reward. MARION: Keep doing what you enjoy and keep finding new things to enjoy. At work, try to develop a good mix of projects you're comfortable with and projects that are a stretch. If you don't like a particular stretch, that's good to know! If you do like it, keep stretching in that direction. Outside of work, prioritize the people and experiences that make you happy. ILTA
