We have moved some of the topics previously included with our survey to the ILTA Tech Survey as they relate to general firm technology. Whereas litigation support may not know the specifics around encryption requirements for data leaving the organization, IT does track that, and we have metrics for these questions from the Tech Survey. We also like to maintain visibility and know the pulse of data transfer protocol both within the U.S. and internationally. I LTA N E T . O R G that's just taking Teams as one example. We're seeing responses that report more laptops, greater reliance on VPNs and VDI, mobile timekeeping, paperless proforma and all of the software updates being pushed to devices – updates our users have to learn. If "embracing change" was a pain point for users before, it has certainly been amplified by all the enhancements to services IT Departments are bringing. And that anxiety is mirrored by those tasked with securing the fort. For the question, "What are your top three work-from-home security concerns?," number one, at 44%, was "unsecured home Wi-Fi." A close second (42%) was "Remote device management (patching, inventory, etc.)" and third (31%) was "Data leakage via removable media." One response that's seeing a steady increase, although still only at eight on the list, is "Family members as 'help desk'". That's a tricky one, as the need for support can arise at any hour of the day, night or weekend, and sometimes texting your teenager to get off the console and lend a hand is tempting. Securing collaborative and mobile environments poses challenges as users expect greater autonomy, easier access and seamless movement between public and private resources while outside the office. Citrix ShareFile is still the leading tool for secure file transfer at 41%, and Mimecast Large File Send is challenging the leader at 32%. Microsoft OneDrive is making headway as well in a close third (31%.) Unfortunately we still have clients and co-counsel who demand the use of "consumer" file-sharing platforms (think Dropbox,) for transferring files. Thus, when we asked, "What is your firm's policy on the use of hosted consumer storage/transfer platforms (Dropbox, Box.com, Evernote, etc.)?," The leading policy by far (at 59%) is, "Allowed for client-controlled shared data, not allowed for firm-controlled shared data." The next closest choice was 9% ("None/Not applicable.") The 2023 survey reports the input of 532 firms representing over 155,000 attorneys and approximately 311,000 total users.
