Finally …. Do we know how to operationalize our innovation? If we don't,
then we stall after pilot, and it might be a looooonnnngggg time before our end
users benefit from the innovation.
Here are some tools and concepts that might help fail fast (think "an ounce
of prevention is worth a pound of cure").
• Decision Scorecard. Develop and implement a scorecard to help put
objectivity around the choice of problem to solve. The more objective
the process, the less impacted by "pet projects". Email me if you want a
sample what we use at ILTA.
• Assume Failure but Plan for Success. If we are truly going to fail fast,
we need to assume that failure will happen – not once, but many times.
But then we do succeed, we can't stop to ask "what's next?" We need to
be ready to go.
• Cultivate your Change Champions. Across roles, across geographies,
etc. And make sure they know what's in it for them, even if that's just
your eternal gratitude. Then overcommunicate.
• Build the Ramp up Time and Ability to Operationalize into the
Scorecard. You may find a gap (resources, timeline, skill sets) quickly
and give your yourself time to address that gap at the same time you are
failing fast.
