The legal industry has adopted to move more in-line with the speed of business solutions – and firms' that are more business-minded can adopt legal delivery models to deliver solutions that solve business challenges. Technology has also advanced to provide tools that meet our needs with scalable, customizable solutions. What used to be called an 'extranet' is now a collaborative hub that can be tailored and templatized to swiftly place technology tools in attorneys' hands. While the traditional information sharing is available and secure, modern collaboration tools provide solutions that include social collaboration – the ability to blog and deliver content that is more casual and bite-sized - and the use of API's, Apps and add-ins have moved to a non-proprietary tech solution that encourage customization to deliver consistent and unique content. Collaboration at its best - litigation support survey In domestic litigation, discovery costs and the quest to manage data and identify the best evidence remains a key consideration in any litigation firm. In 2022, the litigation support survey partners with the Association of EDiscovery Specialists to garner more data from a global audience. There is a great deal of disparity in the requirements and methods used for discovery and evidence-gathering across the globe. Additionally, the specific needs of litigation support, such as the need to retain data on-shore, increases the challenges in using cloud providers. Indeed, with one company sun setting their legacy desktop application - law firms in Canada have been scrambling to identify solutions that can economically provide data management and keep data within the provinces. The litigation support survey was re-vamped in 2021 and continues to maintain questions to gather metrics to compare the changes year over year – but also adds content to get an updated read on the industry. If your firm handles litigation and deals with litigation support and its challenges, please complete the survey regardless of your tech role - it will enable our better understanding of the functional commonalities and disparity in handling client data. We are hopeful we can expand the questions to include our global audience in 2023. The main topics of the survey remain how litigation support tasks are billed / realized, outsource / in-house decision points and data handling. We have expanded into cloud considerations as the days of on-premises software appear to be numbered -- we are hopeful that the results can be aggregated by firm size to avoid the data skewing that occurs by big law solutions.
