We have been working in a more paperless way for two years. Now that we don't have to work that way, will we revert to old processes, habits, and technology or will new ways prevail? For pre-bills/pro formas, particularly, the collaboration between billing lawyers and billing specialists is fundamentally different. Have the outcomes been positive for turnaround time, quality, and client service? This is the key issue. The third area of stickiness addresses issues for those people who will work exclusively (or nearly so) from home. Security is the issue that is top of mind for me in this area. When everyone was at home, security of those home offices was front and center. With people back in the office, are we changing our focus? I don't know the answer, but I believe it is fair to say that most lawyers see even relatively unobtrusive security measures as presenting a challenge for collaboration both internally and externally. In that delicate balance between security and collaboration/convenience, will the pendulum begin to swing more away from security? The second top-of-mind issue for me within security is parity: Proximity bias is often not conscious, but it is human. If you have the choice between walking next door to talk to someone or setting up and participating in a video meeting, which will you do? How will the inevitable disparity of face time between those in the office and those working remote affect staff development and access to opportunity? One of the behavioral changes we made during the pandemic was making collaboration and communication more intentional. I believe that this must stick for us to be equitable and successful. Well, whatever the future brings, I know I will be looking forward to collaborating in-person with many of you at ILTACON and many more in the local meetings, socials, and smaller in-person events that ILTA will bring to you in the second half of 2022! See you there! Hugs to all!
