Emerge Anew with Professional Reinvention • Learn Something New. Many of us chose technology as a profession because of the rate of change, which means we're always learning. When a new role is presented, remind yourself that you're just learning new technology. Let your love of technology carry you. Sean Power is the Chief Information Officer at Lathrop & Gage LLP. Remember, people who liked and supported you before taking on a new role will continue to like and support you. He can be contacted at Sean Power: I ran my own complimentary medical practice and had a teaching position at a university in South Africa before I decided to change careers and countries. In the same way I sold and discarded unnecessary possessions, I tackled an internal process of vacating unnecessary ideas about myself. I focused on my core strengths and skills, then rebuilt myself on those as I found my way in a new place, career and industry. I think it is necessary to continuously plan for reinvention; view it as inevitable, and build it into your life and career. Declare a perpetual war on complacency. It is only through continually challenging your assumed boundaries that you grow and can reinvent yourself when the time comes. Really, it's all just change management! For me, Nelson Mandela is an example of a person who, despite suffering extreme injustice, was able to forge that experience into true greatness. Reinvention on a grand scale! rkrzyminski@bakerdonelson.com. Sally Gonzalez is the CIO for Dentons UKMEA, U.S. and Asia Pacific Regions. She has over 26 years of experience bringing business and IT together in the strategic planning and implementation of complex, information-intensive systems that require tight integration of people, process and technology. Sally presents at industry FROM ONE FIRM TO ANOTHER: COMBINE KNOWLEDGE AND NETWORKING and educational conferences regularly and has numerous articles published in legal trade press. Contact her at sally.gonzalez@dentons.com. Rick Krzyminski: When it was time for a change, I reviewed the things I liked best and least about my then current job. Applying those points to my search enabled me to match my expectations, interests and skills to what was available. I paid close attention to the changes occurring in the business of law and how that could affect the application of technology over the coming years. I read as much as I could on e-zines, blogs, the ILTA website and LinkedIn groups to stay current. I tried to keep an open mind about what my next challenge would be and whether it would find me in a law firm, corporation or consultancy. Peer to Peer 47
