Our entire first season was recorded during the pandemic and not everyone has access to a professional recording studio. We purchased some high- quality microphones that we ship to guests to use during their interviews. We also provide a set of sound quality guidelines and, of course, we do sound checks. We're zeroing in on the recording platform that works best for us. We're now on our fourth platform and have found that having sufficient bandwidth to make high-quality recordings at multiple locations is a high priority. Having a high cap on the number of participants is important, and we appreciate a platform that also offers a video component. We've also learned a lot about the editing process and how to create a finished product that is seamless from beginning to end but still sounds conversational. This is not to say that we've managed to engineer perfect control over every aspect of the process. With our hosts and guests often recording from home, we've had to deal with echoes, road noise, dogs barking and other issues. We've had power outages and guests with equipment failure, but we've managed to find solutions on the fly. And low-tech fixes can be surprisingly effective. One of our hosts still surrounds his mic with pillows for each recording session. Get the Word Out: Leverage Every Communications Vehicle at Your Disposal We've mobilized every medium we have to publicize the podcast. The full first season of In the Public Interest is available on our firm's website, and on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Amazon Music, Pocket Casts, and an RSS feed. We use all the firm's social media tools and send out an email blast to clients and contacts with the launch of each episode. We've found that having our lawyers share a personal note with clients is also an effective way to pique their interest. We're pleased that the podcast has had a great reception from clients, law students and prospective laterals, and we're accruing a lot of 5-star reviews. Based on the number of downloads of each episode within seven days of its release, we're near the top 10% of all podcasts, so we think we're headed in the right direction. Now, on to season two! AND: There's more! Look for a SPECIAL edition ILTA Publications PODCAST from this article in PART 2 of the Summer issue of Peer to Peer! 4 5 Chris Postizzi is Marketing and Communications Director at WilmerHale. Tom Day is Information Services Business Relationship Manager at WilmerHale.
