68 The Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM) is a schema that nearly all litigators are familiar with and it provide useful insight regarding the lifecycle of information. The EDRM diagram set forth above outlines the various phases of managing information during litigation. In furtherance, the EDRM schema outlines the steps that are part of the Information Governance phase of the diagram, the EDRM organization and illustrates those phases within the Information Governance Reference Model (IGRM). The IGRM schema focuses on information management obligations, addressing data lifecycle issues that aren't solely based on addressing litigation obligations. 1 The IGRM diagram set forth above, appearing to the far left of the diagram as the first phase of the EDRM schema, outlines the various phases involved in managing organizational information during the lifecycle of each business record. 2 Elements of an IG Plan - Bringing Order out of Chaos The explosion of data volumes, both structured and unstructured, seen in recent years has caused significant challenges associated with managing and storing various types of information. Creating an IG plan and enforcing the policies set therein help organizations ensure their data management needs are met. IG policies have similar elements to "RIM" (Records Information Management) practices, but IG increases the scope of the focus beyond the retention of information, to also address risk, compliance and data protection. Data Governance decisions directly impact the ordinary course of business. Certain questions must be addressed in order to establish and enforce an IG plan, factors to consider at the outset include: What data resides in what systems; who owns the data; who owns the servers; whom has access to the data; and who is processing it? Also organizations should consider which key stakeholders to involve in the discussion. After identifying the key stakeholders, it is important to recognize the level to which each is supportive of the efforts to create (or improve) an IG plan. 1 Electronic Discovery Reference Model – EDRM - www.edrm.net 2 IGRM Schema https://edrm.net/resources/frameworks-and-standards/information- governance-reference-model/using-the-igrm-model/
