5 I L T A N E T . O R G Q&A It has been a challenging year; how have you adapted to working from home? Has it affected your use of #legaltechnology in at home? James McKenna: My greatest supervisorial tool was "management by walking around"; the pandemic does not allow that. So, I adapted and find myself scheduling many more Zoom calls to make eye contact with as many people as possible. It's the best I can do to "stay connected" in a working remotely world. Ginevra Saylor: As someone who has worked with virtual teams across multiple offices for many years, I have adapted fairly well to working from home. I was already accustomed to meeting, collaborating, and engaging team members over virtual platforms and, given my role, have always adopted and used legal technology from both my home and other remote locations. Although I do miss in-person encounters, I must say that it has been nice having my husband make and deliver my morning coffee to me. Chris Hunt: Personally it has been a relatively smooth transition to working from home. Thankfully I was setup well-enough with a home office and most of the equipment that was necessary, though I did have to beef up my WiFi coverage in the house. Having a laptop with all of our firm-applications and integrations has made this as seamless as it could be. Some things are hard to impossible to do remotely, but those are few and far between today. Angela Dowd: Overall, I very much enjoy WFH. It has made me more intentional about my work. It has given me the opportunity to reexamine why we were doing some things the way we were and also the permission to try new things. It has accelerated the use of #legaltechnology – reluctance to adopt new technologies was wiped away and replaced with a willingness to experiment. Jack Thompson: Adaptivity came from necessity and was easily managed, however it was others on my team and company which had the difficulty in transitioning to remote work. The challenge was aligning many person types to accept the new way of having technology used remotely rather than in the office – Zoom was the most useful tool to walk someone through adoption of a process or a new technology. Use of legal technology at home, was still the same, however now escalated new questions about security, privilege, ethics, and confidentiality to the head of the line to answer and how to manage new expectations. Kara Portwood: Working from home has been a blessing and a curse. I have worked from home off and on through the years. However, during the last year, I find myself working longer and longer hours. Working from home has taught me to be a better communicator through email and every Zoom conversation I have. I am learning when I disconnect to truly disconnect. Time is a gift. Spend it with the people you care about and doing the things you love. Chris Boyd: The transition to working from home has been relatively seamless, thanks to the talent and hard work of our lawyers, IT team, and other business professionals. That said, I dearly miss the office chats and impromptu outings of an in-person workplace. Apart from becoming an MS Teams power user, I haven't used any #legaltechnology I didn't use before. Joy Heath Rush: I have been working from home at least 75% of the time since 2014. That was not new. However, the inability to meet in person whenever needed was a big change. From a tech perspective, the increased use of video conferencing is a given. Perhaps the most surprising change was the rapid adoption of direct messaging - especially cloud based systems. One of the biggest challenges to working from home by mandate rather than by choice is not technology. It is self-care.
