36 P E E R T O P E E R : I L T A ' S Q U A R T E R L Y M A G A Z I N E | S U M M E R 2 0 2 0 Jeffrey Brandt has a long list of titles to his name, including being Jackson Kelly's CIO and the editor of PinHawk Law Technology Daily. He also many years of experience and a long history of engagement with ILTA's peer-to-peer network. We met on Zoom to discuss his forthcoming interview on Law Firm Weekly, and his emphatic assertion that the past months' scramble to respond effectively to a new predicament, brought us to an operational plateau he calls "good enough." According to Brandt, we should now be asking ourselves "where do we go from here?" And "what is that next plateau?". With this question he helped me refine — in simple and effective terms — the mission of Law Firm Weekly, my new YouTube interview show. After a hiatus of almost 8 years, I decided to resurrect — albeit in a format that's true for the moment — a streaming platform we then called ILTA TV. Back then we streamed live from ILTA's conference. With the advent of YouTube, fast internet connections, proliferation of webcams, and the kitchen as acceptable studio backdrop, my guests will join me for a regular bi-weekly interview show. ii3/Studio's Law Firm Weekly will focus on short, real-time interviews that will be then posted almost immediately or in some cases streamed live. The interviews will be driven by underlying business, economical, and social conditions, and not just automation and legal technology. Most of us are now taking stock of where we are and what the next 12 months will look like and are considering what changed forever and what is temporary. Should we assume a "V" or "U" shape recovery? Will law firms need less office space and, if so, how will this affect how we work with the firm's clients? Even more crucial, can law firms make the hard decisions that are yet to come? In one of our forthcoming interviews, Friedrich Blase, an industry observer who worked with law firm management across 17 countries on 4 continents, observes the dangers of indecisive leadership, as well as lessons learned, from the 2008 financial crisis as the "grand rehearsal" from which we can learn. In another interview, I'll discuss the reality of selecting and implementing a collaboration system with McGuire Woods' Martha Breil and why firms are willing to invest in such a platform during these financially challenging times. In yet another, I'll interview Sidley's Rachel Shields Williams and we'll discuss how to rollout a major new knowledge platform to thousands in the middle of social distancing, as well as how experience management will have a direct effect on the firm's efforts to compete in a world of dramatically shifting client priorities. The saying "necessity is the mother of invention" is now losing its quotation marks — it seems that this time around we really mean it, personally, socially, and of course, in our working lives, all of which are now increasingly enmeshed. We are in uncharted territory, having to respond in real time, then quickly assess and reassess whether we've made the right choices, and then course-correct as needed. I am hoping to use this platform to help catalyze those cycles. In the age of YouTube, when everyone can create and broadcast to an audience of billions, I believe the same holds true for what I call the age of "YouExpert". Law Firm Weekly will give voice to those of you who can share and influence the thinking of your peers, helping move our firms from "good enough" to an even more effective law firm management plateau. In the midst of all of this, now more than ever, I am thrilled to again collaborate with ILTA and together bring this content to its membership.
