While reading over the Prosci Change Management guidelines, I found the ADKAR model. This model helps us look at change as a process with measurable steps and can help make any type of change be it personal or professional. So, let's talk about making real change using Change Management and the ADKAR Model. How many times have you tried to make real change in your life or work? We've all tried to change many times in many ways – it's hard to make real change! Let's look at the AKDAR model to see if it can help us understand the stages of the process of change. The AKDAR model is an acronym for Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability and Reinforcement. Awareness – Do you understand the reasons for the change and the risks of not changing? Desire – You have to want to change, you have to believe in the change. When we don't have desire, we often find a way to resist the change. Knowledge – We need to learn HOW to change. What steps can you take to make the change? Get out there and find people and resources that will help you understand why the change is necessary – learn as much as you can about how you the change! Ability – There is a difference in knowing how to do something and actually doing it. When you can transfer knowledge into ability, you bring change to life and gain confidence that you can be successful with a new way of thinking or treating others. Reinforcement – Remember that change is hard, but necessary and in order for real change to be sustained – we need reinforcement to keep the change in place. Speak up, get out of your comfort zone – help others remember why the change is necessary. Now that we have a process for change, think about a scenario in our world where we need to make real change… our world is broken right now and there is a REAL change we need to make – all people need to be seen as people - as humans. All people deserve respect and I beg all of you reading this to show up for your friends, speak out for our members and be the change you want to see in this world. The first step is Awareness. #makerealchange #peoplearepeople #loveoneanother ILTA Marti Phillips VP Education ILTA
