3 I L T A N E T . O R G helping us use products in new ways under new circumstances, stepping up to provide software, services, and advice we didn't know we would ever need at such levels. Our ILTA staff and volunteers enabling engagement which helps us do our jobs better, with less stress and greater optimism. I'll make you a deal, ILTAns. You keep engaging, and we will be there virtually whenever you need us to help, to facilitate, and to lead. Looking forward to where we will be 90 days from now. See you then – maybe even in person! ILTA at 40 Ever had anyone ask you how old you are, and you responded "well, it depends on how you define old." That's part of the fun of ILTA's 40th birthday. Even though ILTA wasn't called ILTA yet – wasn't even an official entity – the group of legal technologists who met together in 1980 represented the genesis of ILTA in every way. Those legal technologists (although hard to believe there was such a thing in 1980) found each other then came together to share problems and develop solutions. They held the first "annual educational conference" (sometimes it was more than once a year). In 1985, that group formed a non-profit called VSLUG – VS Legal User Group. Not the most elegant name, but a powerful concept of people from "competing" organizations collaborating to solve common problems and advocate for beneficial change. Our name has changed twice since 1985 – from VSLUG to LawNet and LawNet to ILTA. What hasn't changed in 40 years? Peers sharing timely information (and sometimes just war stories). Business partners listening to and working cooperatively with customers to advance legal technology. The community working together to provide mutually beneficial education and to create meaningful relationships that last an entire career. Happy birthday, ILTA!
