The discussion focused primarily on building business cases and championing the implementation of chatbots particularly for knowledge management and communications in firms. They further expanded on the importance of emotional intelligence and using it for investigations, cognitive surveillance and the benefits AI has produced for an in-house legal department. When the sessions for ILTACON2019 were posted, it was clear that knowledge bots were on the minds of both law firms and in-house legal departments as there were multiple sessions focused on chatbots and knowledge bots. These sessions expounded on the previous podcasts and performed deeper dives into the technolo and usages. In the session "What's New in Voice- Based Virtual Assistants for Legal?", Justin Farmer of Thompson Reuters, Ragav Jagannathan of KL Software Technologies and Serena Wellenand of LexisNexis presented the current and future states of voice controlled virtual services. Interesting points on risks regarding security, privacy and "spying" concerns were raised as the cloud-based services that understand the spoken words, record them and those recordings are kept indefinitely. The speakers also spoke to how virtual assistants can expediate tasks for attorneys such as keeping and entering time or checking status on cases, which they demonstrated by calling the knowledge bot KLoBot on the phone and simply asking for a status on their case. These speakers provided insight on how software and service providers to legal were leveraging knowledge bots to interact with their systems and provide more benefits to their respective userbases. Another session, "Exploration of Chatbots in the Legal Ops Space" fleshed out legal department usage further on how knowledge bots would help reduce costs, increase productivity and management reporting. The speakers Flyn Flesher of Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C., Gina Anders of Ernst & Young, Shawnna Hoffman of IBM Corporation and Skye Jones of Dell, Inc. spoke at length on budgetary concerns in legal departments and how the technolo can asist in them. This session also examined the leveraging of other Artificial Intelligence(AI) components such as using Robotic Process Automation(RPA) via knowledge bots to complete repetitive low level tasks such as filing emails. The final session discussing chatbots was "Trends in Service Desk Roundtable." The panelists Jonathon Kim of Wood, Smith, Henning & Berman LLP, Craig Friedl of Intelliteach and Brian Maury of Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP led one of the discussions on how chatbots are being using for the service desk to handle self-service and empower users to learn more about the technolo they use and how they can best use it to their advantage. This year's content on chatbots and knowledge bots covered a wide spectrum of topics from pre-deployment to post-deployment, law firm uses to legal department uses, challenges and solutions, failures and successes. More importantly the content gave an overall picture of where we are with this technolo and where we are going. It's clear that knowledge bots are not going away and will only become more involved in our professional and personal lives. It's up to us to continue to learn and use these tools to our benefit to improve us and keep us ahead of the ever-evolving curve.
