irst and foremost, thank you to
everyone who took the time to
complete the Information Governance
(IG) survey. We realize that the survey was
somewhat long, and appreciate the time taken
from your busy schedules to contribute. This
is the first comprehensive IG survey in ILTA
history. The last survey on what would now be
considered IG was ILTA's Data Retention Survey
conducted in April 2009. In 2012, the Law Firm
Information Governance Symposium (LFIGS),
largely comprised of ILTA members, released
their inaugural report, "A Proposed Law Firm
Information Governance Framework," - bringing
IG to the law firm collective consciousness. Given
the limited scope of ILTA's last survey, and an
overall increase in awareness of IG, this survey
stands alone.
Some notable results of the survey:
• It seems surprising that nearly 54% of the
respondents said they did not have a defined
IG program, and in most organizations
(69%), records and IG are not separate.
• 75% of respondents indicated that their IG
and security functions are aligned, and the
vast majority of IG functions (39%) report
to the CIO, followed by the General Counsel
and/or Compliance office.
