We have SAN to DR SAN replication, and still maintain our
traditional tape backups. I just can't seem to let go of them after
having them for so long, but they are difficult to maintain with
the amount of data we have and the time and energy required.
Do you use replication (to a single offsite repository) as your only
backup method, or do you have multiple backups?

We still use traditional backups on top of our SAN-to-SAN replication. What
you will find is you can modify your backups and backup less. For instance,
rather than backing up a whole SQL server (OS and all), backup only the
databases to tape/disk while the storage gets replicated to the other side
via SAN. If you need the server restored, go to the SAN. If you need to just
recover a database, pull it from backups. In the land of DR/BC, you can't
have enough options (as long as your budget supports it).
