t the beginning of the millennium, digitizing the practice of law was one of the major technological trends in the legal industry. Case management software enabled better organization of
depositions, exhibits and other case-related materials. Calendaring applications permitted sharing of schedules. And, of course, there was a frantic flurry of activity to get a handle on e-discovery and managing electronically stored information (ESI). The goal of all this innovation was to more efficiently manage the various elements of a case from one convenient location — the computer desktop. Now, imagine it is the year 2020, where a
major sea change has relocated all of that critical functionality — and more — placing it precisely where it is needed at any given time. Location has become increasingly immaterial, and not just the location of an individual end user, but the location of everyone and everything that touches the technology ecosystem of a case, including co-counsel, support staff, clients, deponents, databases, files, exhibits, transcripts, ESI, additional review documents and audio-visual materials. In 2020, key players are able to fully access, share and collaboratively work on relevant materials anywhere, anytime.
