P E E R T O P E E R : I L T A ' S Q U A R T E R L Y M A G A Z I N E | W I N T E R 2 0 1 8 67 our technolo plan the short term and long term project that allow our attorneys to meet those needs. Are you still an Adjunct Instructor at the University of Central Florida? If so, what changes in technolo are your students seeing most often? What do you think will be their greatest challenge as they enter the workforce? I've been an adjunct instructor at UCF for over a decade and the change in technolo at that level is interesting. The most consistent change that's easy to spot is the move to different social media platforms. Facebook was once only college students, and now most students do not use it with their friends. A new trend I've seen recently is a big increase in collaborative platforms for class coordination. My last few courses usually have someone create a Discord or Slack channel for class collaboration. I think the biggest challenge will be from both employer and employees to find a communication channel that works for all involved, which, frankly, is a challenge many face regardless of generation. You have attended several ILTACON events, and have volunteered as both a speaker and a blogger. Do you think ITLA and/or ILTA's resources have helped your professional career? There is no question that I would not be in the role I am in now without being a volunteer at ILTA. When the role of Director of Information Technolo was created at Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida, the person with whom I've worked as a volunteer at ILTA recommended me. I was able to demonstrate my knowledge of the legal industry and how I would build that department at CLSMF through my experience both in legal and through my work with ILTA. JL JL What type of programming would you like to see ILTA do more of? I would like to see more collaboration between different peer groups. As a member of the program planning council, I hope to work with my peers to deliver that programming content to our members. What don't ILTA members know about you? I grew up surrounded by Blues musicians like Jay Owens, Joe Lewis Walker, Hubert Sumlin, and John Lee Hooker. My mother wrote for Living Blues, played harpsicord and guitar, and managed a few Blues bands in her career. I do not have the skills of the aforementioned musicians, but my newborn daughter so far likes my guitar skills. As I've spoken to ILTA members over the last few months, many often return to the theme that failure is not always the end of a career, a firm, technolo, or a project. What is one of your greatest career lessons-learned? I've recently started learning about improv and found that a lot of principles of business can be found in that art form. Within seconds, your goal is to understand who your scene partner is to you, what scene you are painting for each other and the audience, and what the want or need is of that scene partner. You have to actively listen to you scene partners to gain insight and queues into all of these things. I've translated the wants and needs part to a business setting through a simple phrase that a lot of my co-workers hear from me: "What is the need here?" If you or your team can fully understand a need or want by someone requesting help from your department, your path to fulfilling that need becomes clear. That should lead to a positive outcome for the requestor and your department. JL JL JL Active listening is one of the most important things you can do in my opinion as a leader. If you hear, really hear, what employees are saying, then you can work to provide what is needed to support them. What do you do for fun? Right now my life is focused on my wife and our newborn daughter Ophelia. When time permits, I attend as many UCF Football and Men's Basketball games as I can. ILTA JL Josh is an IT professional with broad experiences that range from small business to Fortune 500 companies. He currently works in the professional services industry as an IT Director and enjoys the challenges of working with software in virtual environments and conversions of IT processes to the cloud. Specialties: Private practice and non-profit legal IT applications, Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp, Appsense, Aderant Expert, Office 365, Philips SpeechExec Enterprise, LegalServer, OpenText eDocs, and the analysis and improvement of internal custom software systems.
