KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT 4 WWW.ILTANET.ORG | ILTA WHITE PAPER While Hallmark suggests the appropriate gi for a ten- year anniversary is tin or aluminum, we believe there are lots of gold nuggets to be found in this year's KM survey. Beginning in 2008, ILTA has conducted legal KM surveys of law firms and legal departments every two years. While there were few surprises in the 2018 results, many of the trends seen in 2016 continued into the current calendar year. One particularly bright note is that more than one-third of the respondents believe that KM staffing will increase over the next year, and several believe that increase will be significant. As in prior years, the survey asked for one response per organization from the person most knowledgeable of or directly responsible for KM within the enterprise. We received 156 responses this year, the most survey responses collected to date. The following summarizes key findings from the survey, followed by the full results. Who Participated The overwhelming majority of responding organizations continue to be law firms at 94%, with 1,000+ aorney firms comprising more than a quarter of the respondents. Organizations with 50 or fewer aorneys saw a slight rise in participation from slightly over 10% (2016) to 14% (2018). Reflecting an expanding global focus, organizations operating in a single country dropped from 56% (2016) to 44% (2018), while the number operating in six or more countries rose from 18% (2016) to 30% (2018). by Amy Halverson of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, PC and Daniel Wood of Womble Bond Dickinson (US) LLP ILTA 2018 KM Survey: Growth, New Technology, and Familiar Challenges ILTA 2018 KM Survey: Growth, New Technology, and Familiar Challenges
