46 PEER TO PEER: THE QUARTERLY MAGAZINE OF ILTA | SUMMER 2018 What would you say to people who say the cloud isn't as secure as an on-premise solution? Being in a small firm... we struggle with security all the time. I spend way too much of my time covering security audits. It's important for my clients to keep [their data] secure. I trust large external providers. We do our due diligence and review their security procedures before ever placing our client's data in their cloud datacenters. As a small firm I certainly feel that hosting in the cloud can be more secure than hosting on premise. We do everything we can to ensure the security and confidentiality of our client's data. I trust the outside vendors do the same, and thus hosting in the cloud is a safe alternative to me. Small Firms Moving to Cloud for Electronic Discovery ASK THE EXPERT Did you have to adjust how you billed your ediscovery work to account for increased/different costs? This was an interesting question that we ended up dealing with and it was an evolution since we have moved from our legacy system and into the cloud. …. We didn't really have any real processing tools in-house, so we leaned very heavily on outside vendors to process documents to get them into shape to load them… and then do the review on our end. In that universe, and since those were all hard costs, it was all billed directly to the client. When we moved to the cloud, some of the things we discussed in our small working task force was evaluating all these things was "Is this a practice we want to continue?" or does this become a service that the company does as value-add for clients? Our initial approach was that this was not going to be a cost that we passed on to clients and instead we were going to absorb the overhead. In theory, this sounds really nice and the clients don't see that on their bills anymore, however, as we've learned as the data costs start ramping up… it was becoming a substantial cost to the firm… I think it was becoming a barrier to actually using the tool.
