You specialize in security and risk management; how
have recent global events changed how security is
viewed at your firm?
It makes us step up the game. To continue to compete in the
marketplace, our clients are insisting on proper controls, in
some cases the best controls, so we have had to implement
them in order to compete.
One of the things I've seen changing most recently is
that there are more security questions in RFPs. Clients are
asking for the security person to be involved in a presentation
if our firm becomes one of the finalists for an RFP. It's going to
be challenging for those of us with a minimal security team.
As a woman in security and IT, have you felt a shift in
diversity over the last few years?
Yes; my background is in IT, before I got into security. I went
into security due to the difficult time women had in IT. Now,
my peers in other firms are much more open to diversity; in
my experience, there is more diversity in the room. I'm seeing
more diversity coming into legal and into security. I've noticed
that peer-firms are hiring women as engineers and analysts;
women are coming in and advancing at a higher level.
How do you view your volunteerism with ILTA? Do you
think it's helped your professional career?
I think it has helped my professional development and
networking capabilities for peer-firms.
One thing I found when I came into the legal industry,
partners are concerned with what's happening in peer-firms.
They want to do what peers are doing; they want to bounce
ideas off other firms. Once relationships are built, a network
of individuals you trust is born. You can let you peers know
what is happening; you have a trust network. You are geing
information to help your firm, to beer their firm.
I will be speaking at LegalSEC; I will be doing a
workshop prior to the start of the conference on Strategic
Design of policies and procedures.
What don't ILTA members know about you?
I am a winemaker.
What do you do for fun?
I like to travel. I'm going to cruise to Alaska this year, going
from Seale up the Inside Passage.
