14 PEER TO PEER: THE QUARTERLY MAGAZINE OF ILTA | FALL 2017 Seek Guidance Whether your law firm has yet to tackle the basic management challenges, or is facing novel challenges dealing with "new" types of information, your steps to success can be similar. Consult your in-house information governance professionals. You might have an expert on staff that will understand your issue. Find lawyers that advise their clients on similar challenges, but have not yet been tapped to share their expertise with the firm. Many lawyers offer guidance on tricky issues of compliance, managing sensitive documents and protecting various forms of personal information. Look to professional organizations like ILTA and ARMA for guidance. Consider an outside consultant who can advise on how other firms have addressed the issue. Strive to implement a policy, rather than a personal workaround or isolated "silo" solution. ASK THE BUSINESS PARTNER Business Intelligence Dashboard Law firms need more than ever to understand the impact of various business models, to identify whether a client or practice is profitable, and to identify opportunities to reduce cost and improve productivity. The information management challenge in most firms is that structured data related to clients, maers, billable time and revenue is stored in silos. To tackle the challenge, consider a business intelligence (BI) dashboard. BI applications enable data- driven decisions by blending data from disparate sources to answer key business questions. In ediscovery management a BI portal can gather data from accounting, operations and ediscovery project data from a document review system and convert the data into meaningful information to support decisions on staffing and billing. It can identify potential savings available through using advanced analytics, such as technology assisted review. Brian Moore FRONTEO USA hp://www.fronteo.com/usa/ Training Train legal professionals on the applications they utilize to manage data. Training is widely overlooked because we think today's applications are user friendly. However, there is a lot to learn about working with and managing data efficiently. Today, it is also important to incorporate training on protecting data from electronic the or ransomware. Knowing how to use your data and protect your data is a legal professional's number one challenge. Let's face it, paper might not be gone, but it is on the way out.
